Many of the roads in Costa Rica go through beautiful mountain regions.
DSCN1734
Some of the roads go above the clouds.
DSCN1737
This mountain pass was cool at 3,491 metres above sea level. (thats almost 2 miles above sea level).
DSCN1740
We camped in front of this American owned restaurant/souvenir shop north of San Jose on the Interamericana highway.
DSCN1743
On our way towards Monte Verde, a popular tourist town high up in the mountains.
DSCN1749
As you get closer to Monte Verde the road changes to dirt and gets quite steep at times. No problem for Poppy the wonder van.
DSCN1751
Downtown Monte Verde.
DSCN1753
We went on a jungle canopy hike at 7:00am one day while in Monte Verde.
DSCN1761
The company we used has built numerous suspension bridges high above the jungle floor and in many cases the treetops.
DSCN1763
At this elevation the jungle is called a cloud forest because most of the jungle is above the cloudline and it's usually very humid if not raining.
DSCN1765
Looking down on the treetops below.
DSCN1770
Dot wonders what's holding this bridge up.
DSCN1771
Paul looking for Tucans and howler monkeys.
DSCN1777
We got to see this millipede and a tree. Wuhoo!
DSCN1782
Dot can hear them, she just can't see some of the critters in the jungle.
DSCN1786
"There's my monkey...the one taking the picture."
DSCN1788
The trees seem to grow right through the bridges.
DSCN1789
Paul feels secure that if the bridge collapses he can grab onto a tree and swing to safefy like Tarzan.
DSCN1792
Girla in the mist.
DSCN1792a
We did a Zipline canopy tour which is not really an eco tour but more of a thrill ride.
DSCN1792b
Some of the cables through the jungle are more than 1/2 a mile long.
DSCN1795
Luckily the system is pretty safe and you cannot easily fall off. Good thing because some of the cables are over 400 feet above the jungle floor.
DSCN1798
"Watch out for that tree!"
DSCN1800
Yes that's rain and mud from the cables on our faces.
DSCN1801a
"Now let me get this straight, you are going to attach me to a wire and push me off a platform at high speed into the jungle?"
DSCN1802a
"Weeee, I'm flying!"
DSCN1803
Coming in for a landing from a place way off in the clouds. Heavenly. Pun intended.
DSCN1804
"Now I'm doing it backwards."
DSCN1823
Our Zipline posse. It was a great group.
DSCN1840
On our way down from Monte Verde. Hopefully our brakes hold up cause it's a long way down to the main highway.
DSCN1847
While camping at a Costa Rican national park, we encountered some wild friends. This was morning of the iguana.
DSCN1855
"I'm a big horney iguana. Get out of my way."
DSCN1858
We called this one peeping Tom. He was curious about us and our van.
DSCN1864
"I'm just blending into the scenery. Don't grind me into the ground as roadkill."
DSCN1867
"Hey hey, my ancestors ate your ancestors. And by the way, we invented sunbathing."
DSCN1870
Although we missed the monkeys in the canopy tour, we encountered many in the campground. Don't leave your bananas lying around.
DSCN1872
"Hey hey we're the monkeys."
