This crazy critter hitched a ride on our windshield wiper. |
On the way to Oaxaca we drove through Matatlan, the Mezcal capital of the world. |
Mezcal is made from the maguey plant. It is a cousin to tequilla. Maguey plants grow all over Oaxaca state. |
"Look Dot, baby mezcal plants." |
Paul inspects the clutch cable at the campground in San Felipe, just up the hill from downtown Oaxaca city. |
Cathedral plaza in downtown Oaxaca. |
Oaxaca cathedral. It's appearance changes with the sunlight. |
"This colonial town is beautiful." |
The "Angel Verdes" (Green Angels) provide free roadside assistance all over Mexico similar to AAA in the states. You just tip them if you use them. We never had to. |
About 10km east of Oaxaca the worlds largest tree purportedly stands. |
Here are the trees measurements. |
Paul bets he can scale the tree in a single bound. |
Dot says she can scale it in half a single bound. |
The tree looks even bigger from a distance. Notice how small the church is in comparison. |
Dot oggles the funky green fruits as the wind whips up. She wants to believe. |
 Martian apples right? |
The campground in San Felipe is also a working Mezcal farm. This particular company produces Mezcal with a scorpion in the bottle instead of the traditional worm. Ouch! |
Dot doesn't know which is worse. The extremely sharp points of the maguey plant sticking in her back or the farm hound about to bite her bootie. |
Homes nearby the mezcal farm. |
Distant farms and mountains. By the way, the tall "trees" are actually the flowers of the plants. |
Both man and plant are one year away from full maturity. |
Pretty Oaxaca cCty as seen from the highway leaving town. |
